Here’s an article on rare woods and ivory used in musical instruments. Ebony, ivory, rosewood, pau d’arco, and other rarities have long been used in musical instruments for their beauty, density and acoustic properties. But such substances have long been illegal to import, even if they are part of  an old piano or guitar.

It seems that musicians have had instruments seized in customs-gone entirely, forever, plus been hit with huge fines for crossing the Canadian border with an old instrument. Bringing in pianos with ivory keys is impossible-the keys have to be removed and replaced with plastic  before they go through customs.
